Paolo Scavino Barolo Ravera 2017 / 750 ml.

Item#: 55247

SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021
Leather, vanilla and spice aromas are expressive, yet underneath there are subtle notes of rose, strawberry, cherry and iron. As this red evolves on the palate, it firms up, remaining harmonious and resonant through the lingering finish. Eucalyptus and wild herb elements emerge with air. Compelling. Best from 2025 through 2045. 500 cases made, 60 cases imported.
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021
Showing resolve and determination, the Paolo Scavino 2017 Barolo Ravera (with fruit from Novello) offers more concentration and a much darker quality of fruit with blackberry and plum. Ravera gives us density and power and a generous display of dark spice with tobacco and toasted hazelnut. Despite that extra muscle and heft, I love how the tannins are so expertly integrated into the fruit.
WS9494 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/21
Having bought a 6.75-acre Ravera plot in 2015, the Scavino family now owns vineyards in 20 different crus of Barolo; this one is their highest-elevation holding and the last to be harvested. The wine exhibits the freshness typical of Ravera even in warmer vintages. Notes of menthol amplify that freshness, as do the cool, mineral tannins that keep the ripe red- and black-cherry flavors taut and precise.

The 2017 Barolo Prapò is yet another stellar wine in this range. Dark and brooding in the glass, the Prapò expresses all of the natural weight of this Serralunga cru, but with more overt fruit and a bit less tannic heft than is often the case. That should make the 2017 a real pleasure to drink, with just a handful of years in the cellar. Succulent black cherry, licorice, menthol, gravel and cured meats build into the heady finish.
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021
This is a bold and opulent wine that sources its fruit from Serralunga d’Alba. The Paolo Scavino 2017 Barolo Prapò delivers rich fruit weight, with plummy black fruit, blackcurrant, iron ore, spice and cured spice. The vines at this site were replanted in 2008 and the fruit shows depth and authenticity, thanks to their advancing age. You get lingering mineral tones of rust and iron that marry this wine to a sense of place. The finish is bold but moderate in length.

The 2017 Barolo Via Nuova is stellar. In 2017, the Via Nuova is a bit nervous, the sign of a Barolo that is going to need a number of years to unwind. Bright red-toned fruit, chalk, crushed rocks, mint and white pepper add pretty aromatic top notes. As always, the Via Nuova is the most taut Barolo in the range. Via Nuova is a blend of seven vineyard sites; Terlo, Paiagallo and Liste (in Barolo); Ravera and Mosconi (in Monforte); and Gabutti and Baudana (in Serralunga).
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021
This classic wine represents a traditional blend of sites including Barolo (Terlo and Liste), Monforte d’Alba (Ravera and Mosconi) and Serralunga d’Alba (Gabutti and Baudana). The organic E Pira-Chiara Boschis 2017 Barolo Via Nuova reveals ripe cherry and raspberry that greet you with a bright, fruit-forward bouquet. I feel the hot-vintage fruit ripeness more in this release than I did in the smaller releases of Mosconi or Cannubi. The wine is slender and elegant in terms of mouthfeel, with a good, polished feel and some subtle bite from the tannins on the close. There are some grassy notes and a spicy point of crushed black pepper as well. 13,000 bottles were produced.

Plums and ripe strawberries with some crushed-stone undertones. Full-bodied and layered with round, rich tannins and an intensely fruity finish. But then, some fine tannins that are cashmere-like. A little tight at the end. From organically grown grapes. Drink after 2024.

The Barolo Cannubi is absolutely gorgeous in 2017. Hot and brutally dry conditions notwithstanding, the Cannubi is creamy and sensual in the glass, with impeccable balance, soft, racy edges and tons of allure. It is easily one of the most sensual, compelling Barolos of the year. Ripe dark red/purplish fruit, spice, mint and cedar meld into the beautifully textured, resonant finish. I am so impressed with the wine’s freshness. Perhaps the anti-hail netting helped keep some shade on the fruit. What a wine.
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021
Chiara Boschis is a historic proponent of organic farming, and she lobbied to make the entire Cannubi cru a certified organic vineyard. Her 2017 Barolo Cannubi shows terrific balance and clean intensity in a vintage that presented quite a few challenges across the appellation due to the heat and drought, along with other issues such as an unexpected frost in April, but that caused the biggest damage to the lowest elevations. The Cannubi is less overtly fruity than the blended Via Nuova or the Mosconi. Instead, it has a more prominent saline imprint with mineral and crushed limestone. However, the quality of the tannins in this release is superior and silkier, and that added structure and focus give the Cannubi the longest drinking window in my opinion of these three new releases. 4,000 bottles were produced.

The 2017 Barolo Gramolere is broad and ample, yet retains the gracious style that is typical of the Manzone Barolos these days. The fruit profile is a bit darker, though, and there is a bit more of an oak imprint. Black cherry, new leather, menthol and spice all meld together effortlessly as the 2017 blossoms with a touch of aeration.

Located in Novello, from three hectares of the Ravera MGA with southwest exposure, the 2017 Barolo Ravera was aged for 32 months in large oak casks. It is forward and expressive with fresh pine, candied cranberry, orange oil, and aniseed. The palate is full of energetic tension, balance, and purity, with apricot pit, tea leaf and saline minerality. An inspiring wine to close out the Vietti 2017 lineup. Drink 2025–2050. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
The 2017 Barolo Ravera is a powerhouse. My impression is that the 2017 is going to develop into something truly special. It has all the energy that makes this site so distinctive, but with an extra kick of fruit density and a whole range of exotic aromatics that make for a truly drop dead gorgeous wine. Bright red/purplish fruit, rose petal, chalk and white pepper build into a finish laced with searing intensity. This is such and impressive wine.
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021
With fruit from Novello, the Vietti 2017 Barolo Ravera is immediately expressive and articulate. The message it communicates is one of elegance and finesse, and the mouthfeel is especially important to this bottle. A silky, almost glossy sheen sets up aromas of cassis, blueberry, wild cherry and crushed stone. These various elements literally glide or skate together in seamless harmony. This was a release of 7,560 bottles.

Coming from Verduno, the 2019 Barolo Monvigliero is nuanced with spices and floral elegance and is pure and ripe with raspberry liqueur, rose petal, peppercorn, and cedar. This medium-bodied red is svelte and refined while having good concentration and drive, with notes of pomegranate, orange zest, and dusty earth. Zesty and lifted, this will take another couple of years to open and mature into the graceful wine it is destined to become. Drink 2025–2040. (Audrey Frick)

With fruit from Castiglione Falletto, the Paolo Scavino 2017 Barolo Bric dël Fiasc is another terrific release from this leading estate. In fact, this wine delivers a big step up in terms of intensity and clarity, with a seamless integration of dark fruit, spice, balsam herb and sweet cherry. It also shows enormous clarity and definition, thanks to subtle touches of limestone and mineral. This wine figures high on a list of the best Barolos made in 2017.
VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
The 2017 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is another gorgeous wine in the line up from the Scavino family. Readers will find a Barolo that is more nuanced and less bombastic than in the past. Bric del Fiasc has plenty of power on its own, so this style works so well. Dried rose petal, mint, spice, kirsch and iron all blossom with a bit of coaxing. I can’t wait to see how it ages.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021
Aromatic, this red offers rose, plum, cherry, licorice, leather and spicy tobacco notes. Firm, yet surprisingly open and balanced at this stage. Remains fresh and long on the savory finish. Best from 2024 through 2038. 708 cases made, 75 cases imported.

Aromatically more expressive and ripe with red flowers and fruits, the 2019 Barolo Ravera is more exuberant and open at this stage, with candied cherry, menthol, and sweet balsamic herbs. The palate takes a more savory and coiled stance at this youthful stage, with iron-rich earth, grenadine, and salted orange. Building tannins are in concert with a persistent spine of acidity that will need time to loosen its grip, but this is a fantastic wine to hold and drink 2026–2046. (Audrey Frick)
