Item#: 57575

RP91+91–93 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Jul 2021
Notes of sweet cherries, cassis, licorice and loamy soil tones preface the 2020 Givry 1er Cru Servoisine, a medium to full-bodied, powerful and concentrated wine with powdery tannins and lively acids. It’s reminiscent of a more dynamic version of the 2018.

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

The 2020 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is no less impressive. Exhibiting aromas of plums, red berries and cassis mingled with orange rind, cinnamon, vanilla pod and spices, it’s full-bodied, deep and layered, with a concentrated core of fruit, lively acids and a long, rose-inflected finish. (William Kelley)

The 2020 Clos-de-la-Roche Grand Cru has an extremely pure bouquet with blackberry, raspberry, violet and crushed stone. This feels very focused and classy. The palate is very well balanced with supple tannins, fine acidity, very smooth and sensual with a welcome touch of bitterness towards the finish. A gorgeous wine, although I feel that Clos Saint-Denis has the edge. (Neal Martin)

The 2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune Vieilles Vignes represents another fine rendition of this remarkably consistent cuvée. Unfurling in the glass with notes of cherries, red berries, warm spices and sweet soil tones, it’s medium to full-bodied, lively and concentrated, with powdery tannins and a long, sapid finish. Given its structure and substance, it will amply reward at least a few years’ patience. (William Kelley)

The 2020 Fixin Village is complex on the nose considering this is a Village Cru: redcurrant, briary, sous-bois and light truffle scents. This is very fragrant. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh with a dab of sour cherry on the finish. Delightful. (Neal Martin)

I tasted barrels from the two components — Servoisine and En Veau—that will be blended to create Joblot’s 2020 Givry 1er Cru Mademoiselle. Offering up aromas of citrus and orchard fruit, this evidently is a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and precise wine in the making; but given the early stage at which I tasted it, I’ll refrain from saying much more.
