Domaine Joseph Roty Cote de Nuits-Villages 2017 / 750 ml.

Item#: 52871

The 2017 Côtes de Nuits Villages, comes from a parcel next to Les Evocelles, is bridled with a fine, classically styled bouquet with sous-bois infused red berry fruit mixed with a hint of tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, silky smooth in style, very well judged acidity and the new oak is seamlessly integrated on the sensual finish. I bet a lot of people will overlook this modest cru within Roty’s range of 2017s. My advice is: don’t.

The 2017 Côtes de Nuits Villages has an elegant, refined bouquet of red cherries and crushed strawberry aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Very natural and poised. I prefer this to the 2018.

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis Clos des Ormes 1er Cru has a pure, quite generous, almost Chambolle-like bouquet of ample red cherries, raspberry coulis and subtle vanilla aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit and a fine bead of acidity. Quite “correct” and linear, yet with admirable precision toward the finish. This is a finely crafted Morey Premier Cru from Jadot.
RP90+90–92 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jan 2019
The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Clos des Ormes (Maison Louis Jadot) was showing very well, bursting with aromas of sweet berry fruit, candied peel, baking chocolate and warm spices. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, satiny and lavish, with juicy acids, fine but chalky structuring tannins and a long finish.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos du Fonteny 1er Cru, which contains 40% whole bunch fruit, has a very detailed bouquet of crushed-stone-infused, minerally fruit; hints of incense and lavender emerge with time in the glass. The palate is fresh and vibrant right from the start, offering candied tart red fruit mixed with orange zest and citrus peel, wonderful definition and such vivacity on the finish that you will beg for another sip straight away. Might this surpass the Clos Saint-Jacques this year?

RP93+93–95 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jan 2019
As usual, the 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains is the most structured, tight-knit wine in the Chevillon cellar, unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis, dark chocolate and rich soil, framed by smoky new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, richly tannic and concentrated, with imposingly broad shouldered structure and a deep, reserved core. Again, patience will be required and rewarded.
VN93+93–95 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2019
The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Vaucrains 1er Cru has a little more precision than the Les Saint-Georges on the nose: the terroir more articulated, greater energy conveyed by the aromatics. The pure, precise palate is beautifully balanced with filigreed tannin and an effervescent and very sustained finish that is pure class. This could well be the standout from Chevillon this year. A wine from the top drawer.

The 2017 Chambertin Grard Cru is just a glorious success. Vivid red fruit, Morello cherries, wild strawberry and pressed violets on the nose, the aromatics here feel so animated and exquisitely defined. The palate is perfectly balanced with a killer line of acidity: crystalline red fruit, filigree tannins and more freshness than it knows what to do with. There is a sense of “channeled intensity” in this Chambertin and whilst there is no question that it is a 20- to 30-years wine, I felt no guilt in polishing this off in its youth. Tasted at Maison de Colombier in Beaune. (Neal Martin)
SP9898 pts. - Wine Spectator - May 31, 2021
Succulent cherry, raspberry and rose aromas and flavors are framed by vanilla and toasty oak in this majestic red, which is concentrated, yet lithe and fruity, with an intense sappiness to the texture. Beautifully balanced and long, this soars on the complex, mineral-infused aftertaste. Best from 2025 through 2050. 150 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jan 2021
Revisited from bottle, the 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru is showing beautifully, soaring from the glass with expressive aromas of sweet red berry fruit, smoked meats, coniferous forest floor, mandarin orange and peonies, framed by a deft application of cedary, spicy new oak. Full-bodied, sumptuous and enveloping, its velvety attack segues into an ample core of succulent fruit, concluding with a long and resonant finish. This is likely to be both deceptively approachable young and notably long-lived, offering a broad drinking window. (William Kelley)

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Champs-Chenys, from vines adjacent to Charmes-Chambertin, is well-defined on the nose, offering blackberry, bilberry, touches of meat juice and light savory notes. The medium-bodied palate is fresh and vibrant, with fine grip on the entry and an almost symmetrical poise on the graphite finish. Excellent.

The 2019 Marsannay Champs Saint-Etienne is much more backward on the nose compared to the Marsannay Village, slightly earthy black fruit and sous-bois emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a fresh, citrus-driven opening, tangy marmalade infusing the black fruit, and graphite toward the tensile finish. I appreciate the focus and harmony of this cuvée, which should age well in bottle. (Neal Martin)
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 20th Jan 2022
The 2019 Marsannay Champs Saint Etienne is showing well, revealing aromas of sweet red berries, rose petals and licorice, framed by a discreet touch of oak. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, with lively acids and fine, chalky tannins, it’s mineral and precise, as it so often is. (William Kelley)

One of the portfolio’s highlights is the 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin La Brunelle, a medium to full-bodied, rich and velvety wine with a fleshy core of fruit, melting tannins and lively acids, concluding with a saline finish. As ever, it’s one of the most immediate, sensual wines in the cellar. (William Kelley)

The 2019 Bourgogne Pressonnier is cohesive on the nose of blackberry, boysenberry jam and light violet aromas unfurling with time. Silky-smooth on the entry (you might well mistake this for a Vosne-Romanée), building nicely in the mouth and showing good salinity on the finish. (Neal Martin)
RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 20th Jan 2022
Exhibiting aromas of cherries, raspberries, peonies and licorice, the 2019 Bourgogne Pressonnier is medium-bodied, deep and vibrant, with tangy acids, powdery tannins, and a long, penetrating finish. It’s the most serious and age-worthy of Roty’s regional bottlings. (William Kelley)

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur Bas displays a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, touches of brown spice and espresso emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with granular tannins, a fine bead of acidity and a dash of white pepper and clove toward the finish. I like the focus and harmony of this Gevrey, and it should age well after 4–5 years in bottle to absorb the new wood. (Neal Martin)
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 20th Jan 2022
The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur Bas unwinds in the glass with aromas of sweet berries and cherries mingled with warm spices, licorice and peonies. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and fleshy, with powdery tannins and an elegantly muscular profile, it shows considerable promise for the cellar. (William Kelley)
