Domaine Joseph Roty Marsannay Champs Saint-Etienne 2019 / 750 ml.

Item#: 58161
The 2019 Marsannay Champs Saint-Etienne is much more backward on the nose compared to the Marsannay Village, slightly earthy black fruit and sous-bois emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a fresh, citrus-driven opening, tangy marmalade infusing the black fruit, and graphite toward the tensile finish. I appreciate the focus and harmony of this cuvée, which should age well in bottle. (Neal Martin)
The 2019 Marsannay Champs Saint Etienne is showing well, revealing aromas of sweet red berries, rose petals and licorice, framed by a discreet touch of oak. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, with lively acids and fine, chalky tannins, it’s mineral and precise, as it so often is. (William Kelley)

Where It's From
Country / France
The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.
Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

One of the portfolio’s highlights is the 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin La Brunelle, a medium to full-bodied, rich and velvety wine with a fleshy core of fruit, melting tannins and lively acids, concluding with a saline finish. As ever, it’s one of the most immediate, sensual wines in the cellar. (William Kelley)

This violet-scented Pinot Noir is marked by plump, mouth-drenching black-cherry and plum flavors edged by licks of sweet spice and vanilla. Framed by fine, glossy tannins and a juicy spine of acidity, this immediately welcoming wine is particularly joyous young but will likely hold well through 2027. (Anna Lee C. Iijima)

Unwinding in the glass with notes of blackberries, cassis, dark chocolate and spices, the 2019 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers is medium to full-bodied, rich and textural, its muscular chassis of tannin cloaked in an enveloping core of fruit, concluding with a mineral finish. This is quite a velvety, charming rendition of Chevillon’s Pruliers.
The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru has more freshness and delineation on the nose compared to the Les Perrières, and a little more focus, offering mineral-rich red berry fruit. The palate is very well balanced with nicely integrated oak. The terroir expression is more articulated here compared to some of Chevillon’s other Premier Crus and there is plenty of tension on the sorbet-fresh finish. Excellent.

The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Thorey 1er Cru, which is two-thirds whole cluster, has a very focused bouquet of elegant red cherry, raspberry and briary aromas, plus a hint of bay leaf and sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine bead of acidity thanks to the calcareous soils, and displays superb tension and focus toward the finish. A gorgeous, ethereal Aux Thorey.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Village reveals inviting aromas of cassis, black tea, sweet spices, licorice and peonies. Medium to full-bodied, supple and lively, with melting tannins and an ample core of fruit, it concludes with a saline finish. The charm and immediacy of the vintage is on full display. The 2017 Côtes de Nuits Villages, comes from a parcel next to Les Evocelles, is bridled with a fine, classically styled bouquet with sous-bois infused red berry fruit mixed with a hint of tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, silky smooth in style, very well judged acidity and the new oak is seamlessly integrated on the sensual finish. I bet a lot of people will overlook this modest cru within Roty’s range of 2017s. My advice is: don’t.
The 2017 Côtes de Nuits Villages has an elegant, refined bouquet of red cherries and crushed strawberry aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Very natural and poised. I prefer this to the 2018.

The 2019 Bourgogne Pressonnier is cohesive on the nose of blackberry, boysenberry jam and light violet aromas unfurling with time. Silky-smooth on the entry (you might well mistake this for a Vosne-Romanée), building nicely in the mouth and showing good salinity on the finish. (Neal Martin)
Exhibiting aromas of cherries, raspberries, peonies and licorice, the 2019 Bourgogne Pressonnier is medium-bodied, deep and vibrant, with tangy acids, powdery tannins, and a long, penetrating finish. It’s the most serious and age-worthy of Roty’s regional bottlings. (William Kelley)

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Champs-Chenys, from vines adjacent to Charmes-Chambertin, is well-defined on the nose, offering blackberry, bilberry, touches of meat juice and light savory notes. The medium-bodied palate is fresh and vibrant, with fine grip on the entry and an almost symmetrical poise on the graphite finish. Excellent.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur Bas displays a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, touches of brown spice and espresso emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with granular tannins, a fine bead of acidity and a dash of white pepper and clove toward the finish. I like the focus and harmony of this Gevrey, and it should age well after 4–5 years in bottle to absorb the new wood. (Neal Martin)
The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur Bas unwinds in the glass with aromas of sweet berries and cherries mingled with warm spices, licorice and peonies. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and fleshy, with powdery tannins and an elegantly muscular profile, it shows considerable promise for the cellar. (William Kelley)
