The 2019 Pinot Noir Cahill Lane Vineyard is elegant, understated and classy. Silky tannins and mid-weight structure give the 2019 so much appeal. As with all of these wines, the flavors are bright and punchy, with plenty of red berry, white pepper, mint and citrus character.

Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Kosta Browne is taking great care of this former Saintsbury vineyard source. A brilliant vein of black cherries and sour cherries weaves through black tea, redwood duff and subtle oak spices in this medium- to full-bodied wine, as dazzling acidity and moderate tannins energize the palate. Great balance and impressive depth make it stand out. Best from 2025–2032. (Jim Gordon)
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022
Medium ruby, the 2019 Pinot Noir Cerise Vineyard is rustic to begin, with accents of tar, tobacco and bay leaves over an intense core of dark red fruit. The palate is full-bodied with abundant, gently chewy tannins, bright freshness and a long, earth-laced finish. (Erin Brooks)
SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2022
Boasts a core of sassafras as well as mulled blackberry and raspberry fruit, with a twinge of bramble along the edges and a spine of fresh acidity lending definition. Drink now through 2023. 1,400 cases made. (James Molesworth)

I also loved the 2019 Pinot Noir White Label. This is another classic Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, offering loads of framboise and ripe strawberry fruit intermixed with subtle spice, forest floor, and subtle herbal nuances. Playing in the medium-bodied end of the spectrum, it’s wonderfully balanced and has a silky, polished mouthfeel as well as a great finish. It’s another beautiful Pinot Noir that I suspect will have a good decade of overall longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2019 Pinot Noir Cuvée Alyce is a dark, powerful wine. Black cherry, plum, cedar, lavender, spice and menthol infuse the Alyce with notable depth. Dense and muscular, the Alyce is a decidedly potent, backward Pinot. All it needs is a bit of time to be at its best. (Antonio Galloni)

The appellation 2019 Pinot Noir is brilliant, and I like it every bit as much as many of the more expensive single vineyards. Spiced red fruits, loamy earth, leather, and subtle smoke notes give way to a medium-bodied, textured, incredibly charming Pinot Noir that already offers pleasure yet has the balance to keep for at least 7–8 years. The 2019 Chardonnay The North Slope Vineyard is creamy, open-knit and generous, as these wines tend to be. Apricot, mint, pineapple and passion fruit flesh out nicely, framed by soft, plush contours that add considerable appeal. The 2019 has softened quite a bit since I tasted it last year.

The 2019 Chardonnay Cuvée Alyce is a total knock-out. Rich, ample and explosive, the 2019 possesses tremendous depth and textural elegance to burn. Citrus confit, white flowers, chamomile and light tropical notes lend an exotic flair to this striking, beautifully delineated Chardonnay from Hansel.

The 2021 Chardonnay Cuvée Alyce is a classic Stephen Hansel wine. It offers notable richness but also a great deal of transparency. Hansel blends two variations of Wente Clone Chardonnay (Hyde and Hudson) with some clone 76 for his Cuvée Alyce, a Chardonnay that exudes class. (Antonio Galloni)

RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Dec 2019
Pale to medium ruby-purple, the 2017 Pinot Noir South Slope (all Dijon clone 777) has a savory nose of toast, dried leaves, pipe tobacco, dried rose petals, amaro and tangerine peel with a core of blackberries and cranberries. The palate is medium-bodied and silky with fine, grainy tannins and great freshness, finishing long. 1,081 cases produced.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2020
Hansel’s 2017 Pinot Noir The South Slope Vineyard is a very pretty and expressive wine. Spice, game, earthy notes, licorice and dried cherry give the South Slope its distinctly savory personality. Pliant and juicy, the 2017 is a terrific choice for drinking now and over the next few years. Today, the fruit is a bit in the background, while earthier qualities are more present than they were last year.

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Dec 2019
Pale to medium ruby-purple, the 2017 Pinot Noir Cahill Lane has a broody nose of sliced blueberry, black cherry and warm blackberries with cinnamon, nutmeg, tree bark and amaro accents plus crushed red cherries, raspberry jam, warm strawberries and dried flowers. Medium-bodied and silky, it fans out in the mouth with lush, concentrated fruits and tons and tons of spicy and earthy accents, with a firm frame of grainy tannins and very juicy acidity, finishing very long and layered. 750 cases produced.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - May 2019
The 2017 Pinot Noir Cahill Lane Vineyard is soft, creamy and voluptuous, all of which give it tremendous raciness and immediacy, especially for this wine and given its bottling just two weeks before I saw it. Ripe red cherry/raspberry, mint, chalk and floral notes abound. The Cahill Lane is surprisingly, shockingly open at this stage, not that that will be an issue of any kind.

The 2019 Chardonnay The Meadows is creamy and ample in the glass, but shows the fresh, vibrant style that defines the vintage at Hansel. Lemon confit, spice, dried flowers and chamomile all take shape in the glass. Dry-farmed Chardonnay, all Hanzell clone, on the lowest-lying blocks of the property, yielded a Chardonnay with thick skins and notable intensity.

The 2017 Chardonnay The Meadows opens with lovely sweetness, creaminess and breadth, but it has plenty of supporting structure that becomes more apparent on the midpalate and finish. Dried flowers, chamomile, apricot and orchard fruit all meld in this silky, expansive Chardonnay. The 2017 The Meadows should drink well with minimal cellaring.
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Dec 2019
The 2017 Chardonnay The Meadows Vineyard gives smoke and gunflint aromas to begin, with red apple skin, crushed shell, flaky pastry, white peach and white blossoms. The palate is medium to full-bodied, creamy and pleasantly weighty in the mouth with concentrated fruits, juicy freshness and a long, minerally finish. 544 cases produced.

The 2021 Chardonnay The Estate Vineyard is gorgeous. Bright and effusive, with tons of energy, the 2021 Estate is lights out. There is a feeling of precision in the 2021 that is palpable. All the elements are so well balanced. Hints of tangerine oil, mint, dried flowers and chamomile open first, followed by a touch of reduction and then bright mineral accents that pull it all together. The Estate, from Stephen Hansel’s original vines, is exquisite. The price? Ridiculous. (Antonio Galloni)
