M. Chapoutier Le Pavillon Hermitage

2011 / 750 ml.

Item #: 37910

RP100100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Dec 2013
Even better and a prodigious effort that hits all my sweet spots, the 2011 Ermitage Le Pavillon comes from one of the top terroirs on Hermitage hill, the granite soils of the Les Bessards lieu-dit. Spectacularly perfumed, with raspberry, blackberry, licorice, toasted spices and assorted floral nuances, this full-bodied effort has massive depth and richness, no hard edges and masses of finely polished tannin that emerge on and frame the finish. It will be approachable at an earlier age than either the 2009 or 2010, yet should nevertheless have 2–3 decades of ultimate longevity.

K Vintners The Hidden Syrah

Northridge Vineyard
2013 / 750 ml.

Item #: 44174

RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Jun 2016
Reminding me of a Northern Rhone Syrah from the Le Meal lieu-dit on Hermitage Hill, the 2013 Syrah The Hidden Northridge Vineyard comes entirely from the Northridge Vineyard on the Wahluke Slope, was fermented with 100% whole clusters and aged in mostly neutral oak. It offers thrilling notes of black raspberries, toasted bread, caramelized meats and licorice in a full-bodied, ultra-pure, supple, incredibly sexy style. Possessing building, fine tannin, it needs a lengthy decant if drinking anytime soon, but this utterly seamless, perfectly balanced beauty will offer upward of two decades of overall longevity.
WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 2/1/2017
Aromas of pomegranate, black fruit, herb and barrel spice lead to rich seamless palate-coating dark-fruit flavors. It’s hedonistic but retains a sense of balance along with an unabashed deliciousness.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2016
Broad, generous and opulent, with raspberry, black cherry and rhubarb flavors that maintain momentum into a long and supple finish, picking up hints of dill and black tea. Best from 2018 through 2023. 760 cases made.

The Colonial Estate Exile

2002 / 750 ml.

Item #: 23365

RP9898 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 1st Oct 2004
Produced from a dry-farmed, single vineyard of old vine Shiraz (some of which are 120 years old), the stunning, inky/purple-tinged 2002 Shiraz Exile was aged in 100% new French oak. A sweet nose of black fruits, flowers, melted licorice, and espresso roast precedes a wine of amazing concentration, compelling intensity, and a tremendous finish of more than 60 seconds. Although expensive, readers must take into consideration the age of the vines as well as the limited production. This exquisite Shiraz is approachable, but promises to hit its peak in 3–5 years, and last for two decades. Kudos to proprietor Jonathan Malthus for his work in the Barossa.

Vagabond

2004 / 750 ml.

Item #: 24143

RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 1st Dec 2006
An impressive new offering is the 580-case 2004 Vagabond, a blend of 60% Syrah and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged completely in French oak, it boasts a dense ruby/purple hue, a big, sweet, blackberry, flower, pepper, coffee, and chocolate-scented bouquet, full body, and a soft, expansive style. Drink it over the next 7–8 years.
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2007
Shows wonderful intensity and purity of fruit, with spicy, peppery blackberry and wild berry flavors and hazelnut and cedar notes. Deftly balanced and persistent on the finish, gaining complexity. Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2011.

Ferraton Père et Fils Ermitage Le Méal

2003 / 750 ml.

Item #: 26866

SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - May 15, 2006
Shows the exotic ripeness of the vintage, with a blast of blackberry and boysenberry confiture aromas and flavors, quickly followed by mocha, vanilla bean and dark coffee notes. Dark finish has tons of grip and smoky toast, leaving a broad, rather than precise impression. Best from 2008 through 2025.
RP91+91–94 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 1st Dec 2004
The 2003 Hermitage Le Meal Estate’s dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by aromas of gun flint, crushed rocks, black currants, and acacia flowers. This is an elegant yet medium to full-bodied Hermitage with significant character as well as length. Anticipated maturity: 2009–2025.

RP97+97+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 22nd Dec 2011
As I wrote last year, the 2009 Hermitage La Chapelle is easily the greatest, most profound La Chapelle since the 1990. Most of this cuvee comes from Le Meal and Les Bessards vineyards, with a touch of Les Roucoules fruit in the blend. It is an opaque purple-colored wine with enormous concentration in addition to an extraordinary bouquet of graphite, creme de cassis, blackberries, licorice, beef blood and a touch of smoked game. Boasting phenomenal intensity, a full-bodied mouthfeel and 50 years of longevity, the only thing that could possibly hold it back is that most consumers should plan on laying it away for 8–10 years.
ST9595 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Mar/Apr 2012
Opaque purple. Complex, highly fragrant aromas of candied dark fruits, cola, incense and violet, with bright mineral and spice nuances adding lift and energy. Stains the palate with deep blackberry and boysenberry flavors that expand and gain sweetness with aeration. Refuses to let up on the finish, which leaves peppery spice and floral pastille notes behind.
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2012
This is packed and well-rendered, with notes of fig, boysenberry confiture and ganache at the core and powerful structure pushing from behind. Shows plenty of roasted tobacco and vanilla bean on the slightly stolid finish, but there’s a density and brooding length here that sets it apart form the pack. Best from 2017 through 2032. 250 cases imported.
ST94+94–96 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Jan/Feb 2011
Glass-staining purple. Intense, assertively perfumed aromas of blueberry preserves, cherry, licorice and violet, with a strong incense quality. Impressively deep and spicy, offering floral-accented dark berry flavors that show superb clarity and a lively mineral quality. Tangy acidity adds lift and cut to an endless, sappy finish. This wine’s blend of richness and energy is outstanding.

Shop for Syrah (Shiraz)

You say Syrah, and I say Shiraz. Wine lovers will tell you they're the same grape, just from different settings. The Australian red wine, Shiraz, burst onto the scene in the 1990's and remains popular to this day, and it's hard to believe it's made from the same grape that's used to make the famous red wines of France's Northern Rhône. Thanks to the vastly different climates and terroir in those two places, the grape produces vastly different wines.

Other regions are having some success with Syrah/Shiraz wine, as well. California, South Africa, Chile, and others have created some stellar bottles in recent years.

If you're in the market for a red wine - Shiraz, Syrah...whatever you want to call it - look no further than WineMadeEasy.com!
