You say Syrah, and I say Shiraz. Wine lovers will tell you they're the same grape, just from different settings. The Australian red wine, Shiraz, burst onto the scene in the 1990's and remains popular to this day, and it's hard to believe it's made from the same grape that's used to make the famous red wines of France's Northern Rhône. Thanks to the vastly different climates and terroir in those two places, the grape produces vastly different wines.

Other regions are having some success with Syrah/Shiraz wine, as well. California, South Africa, Chile, and others have created some stellar bottles in recent years.

If you're in the market for a red wine - Shiraz, Syrah...whatever you want to call it - look no further than WineMadeEasy.com!

Based on 74% Syrah and 26% Grenache brought up in in a combination of concrete tanks (for the Grenache) and one year old demi-muids (for the Syrah), the 2018 Cotes Du Roussillon Bastide Miraflors is a knockout bottle of wine. It offers loads of black fruits, roasted herbs, peppered meat, violets, and bacon fat as well as full-bodied richness, a round, opulent style, ripe tannins, and a blockbuster finish. It’s one of the finest values out there.

  7. Alain Voge Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#56020

    JD9898 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/19/2020
While not submitted to my tasting (and it wasn’t presented from barrel last year), it would be hard to imagine there won’t be a Les Vieilles Fontaines cuvée. Don’t miss a chance to buy a bottle if you find one. Moving to the 2018 Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes, this beauty is cut from the same cloth as the Les Chailles yet is deeper and richer, with another level of concentration. Black and blue fruits, ground pepper, violets, smoked game, and loads of spring flower notes define the bouquet, and it has a vibrant, almost old school vibe that carries plenty of power yet still stays light and elegant on the palate. This beautiful, singular wine is open and enjoyable today, yet I wouldn’t be surprised to see it close down with a year or two of bottle age. It should see its 20th birthday in fine form.
    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2020
Opaque ruby. An exotically perfumed bouquet displays powerful aromas of black and blue fruit preserves, incense, peony and olive paste. Palate-staining blackberry, boysenberry, fruitcake and floral pastille flavors deepen steadily on the back half. Gains weight and sweetness with air, finishing with a jolt of smoky minerality, sneaky tannins and outstanding persistence.
    RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th May 2021
The 2018 Cornas Vieilles Vignes blends fruit from some of the top lieux-dits of the appellation: Combe, Patou, La Côte, Les Mazards and Chaillot. Aged 20 months in approximately 15% new oak, it’s a dark, inky-hued wine, but one that retains bright, fresh fruit notes of red raspberries and plums alongside hints of cedar and menthol. It’s full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, with a firm, granitic structure and sense of restraint, fine-grained, almost silky tannins and tremendous length.
    SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 28, 2021
Dark and winey, with lots of steeped black cherry, plum and blackberry fruit forming the core while light sweet tapenade, rosemary and mineral notes streak through on the finish. Vivid, energetic Cornas. Best from 2022 through 2036. 1,350 cases made, 128 cases imported.

Starting with the 2018 Saint Joseph Domaine, this beauty boasts a deep purple hue as well as a rounded, sexy, mouthfilling style that carries fabulous black and blue fruits, peppery herbs, licorice, and spice-driven aromas and flavors. This ripe, fleshy, sexy Saint Joseph is ideal for drinking over the coming 10–12 years.

    SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2021
Deep and powerfully built, with a rich and polished texture that highlights wild berry and blueberry flavors that show notes of espresso, smoky beef and black pepper. Finishes with big but refined tannins. Syrah and Petite Sirah. Drink now through 2030. 3,300 cases made.
    JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/27/2021
While I don’t think the 2017 Relentless will match the 2018, it’s nevertheless a beautiful Syrah that offers lots of smoky dark berry fruits, barbecue notes, spice, and meaty nuances in a rich, pure, nicely textured, medium to full-bodied package. It’s going to evolve gracefully for a solid 10–12 years.
    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
Composed of 86% Syrah and 14% Petite Sirah, the 2017 Relentless has a deep garnet-purple color and fragrant notes of cracked black pepper, licorice and violets over a core of plum preserves, Black Forest cake and mulberries plus an earthy waft of tar. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has lovely purity and freshness, featuring ripe, rounded tannins and lots of pepper and spice layers, finishing refreshingly savory.

    2014 / 750 ml. | Item#45688

    RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Jun 2017
Including just a splash of Viognier, the 2014 Estate Syrah from Force Majeure is a killer effort that possesses uncommon purity and finesse paired with serious depth and richness. Giving up notes of pure black currants, blueberries, graphite, violets and hints of peppery meats, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a layered, seamless texture, integrated acidity and fine tannin. Give this incredible Syrah 2–3 years of bottle age and enjoy over the following decade. Is this the SQN of Washington?

  12. Motor City Kitty Syrah

    Oldfield-Boushey Vineyard
    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#55214

    JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 4/15/2020
Coming from the Oldfield and Boushey Vineyards (basically the same vineyard), the 2017 Syrah Motor City Kitty Oldfield-Boushey Vineyard is slightly darker colored and, as with all the Rhones here, wasn’t destemmed and was brought up in mostly neutral puncheons. Blackberries, smoked earth, game, chocolate, and chalky minerality all emerge from this beauty, and it’s a powerful, full-bodied, concentrated effort that will evolve positively for 2–4 years and keep for a decade.
    JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, June 1, 2020
This is deep and flavorful with spice, meat, wet earth and a light, greenish note. It’s medium-to full-bodied, lively and flavor-focused. Drink now.
