The 2020 Syrah Que Syrah Vineyard, from Nathan Roberts’ home vineyard near Occidental, was picked very late for the year, on November 1. It offers up a beguiling mix of bacon fat, licorice, game, scorched earth, cracked pepper, grilled herbs and black fruit. The Que Syrah has a very strong, assertive profile loaded with the smokier, gamy qualities that are typical of Syrah, especially cool climate Syrah. I did not pick up any taint, but there is no question this is a wine with a very strong aromatic and flavor profile that may not be everyone’s cup of tea.

Considering this is mostly a syrah–petite sirah blend (with some grenache and mourvedre), it’s surprisingly lifted, its flavors of cherries and red plums carrying plenty of spicy oak. Serve with a light chill for chicken sausages.

The 2020 Space Cadet is the star in this range from Paul Lato. Silky and aromatic, the 2020 is hauntingly beautiful from the get-go. Inky red/purplish fruit, sage, cedar, tobacco, incense and dried flowers are some of the many notes that race across the palate. All the elements are so well balanced. Space Cadet is mostly Syrah and some Grenache, but the Grenache really seems to drive the profile today. (Antonio Galloni)
A 65/35 split of Syrah and Grenache from the Bien Nacido and Larner vineyards, the 2020 Space Cadet reveals an almost opaque ruby/purple hue to go with a rocking nose of red, blue, and black fruits as well as ground pepper, violets, and some gamey, meaty nuances. It’s full-bodied on the palate, has a wealth of fruit, plenty of tannins, and a great finish. It’s going to benefit from a year or two in the cellar and drink brilliantly over the following decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)
The 2020 Space Cadet comes from 20- to 30-year-old vines at Bien Nacido and Larner vineyards and is a blend of 65% Syrah and 35% Grenache. It was matured in 57% new French oak and concrete eggs for 22 months. Medium ruby-purple, it’s reticent then floral, unfolding to violet, powdered sugar, black raspberries and cherries. The full-bodied palate is chalky with powerful, ripe fruit, rounded acidity and a long finish with spicy accents. 144 cases were made. (Erin Brooks)

The 2021 Syrah Cleary Ranch captures all the coastal, cool-climate savoriness of the Petaluma Gap. Game, scorched earth, tobacco and black pepper are all woven into a core of dark red-fleshed fruit. Huge tannins, a combination of site and a vintage with low juice yields wrap it all together. This dense, concentrated Syrah needs a few years in bottle, although it is already stunning in its beauty. (Antonio Galloni)

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Montecillo Vineyard is a headspinning wine. Rich, dense and explosive, the 2019 captures all the pedigree of this great site. Readers will find a towering, statuesque Cabernet of the highest level. Graphite, leather, dried herbs, menthol and licorice play off a core of intense, dark fruit. Potent, muscular tannins need time to soften, but, wow, what a wine. Best of all, the Montecillo is one of the most insane values readers will find in elite California Cabernet Sauvignon. I would be thrilled to own it.

The 2019 Gamay Noir El Dorado is another hugely appealing wine in this lineup. Sweet red cherry, plum, rose petal and spice give the 2019 striking inner sweetness and perfume. In this vintage, the El Dorado is a bit lighter in feel than it has been in the past. I imagine that is partly a reflection of the year and also the result of a reduction in carbonic maceration in the winemaking.

The 2021 Trousseau + Pinot Noir takes the place of the Trousseau in this vintage. Duncan Arnot and Nathan Roberts felt the Trousseau was too light on its own, so they blended in some Pinot from Fox Creek to complement the Luchsinger Trousseau. The wine turned out beautifully. Sweet red cherry fruit, cedar, tobacco, spice, dried flowers and rose petal are all nicely lifted, with gorgeous aromatic presence from the 100% whole clusters. This translucent, wonderfully expressive red is all class. I have to say, the blend of Trousseau and Pinot Noir works so well. I would not be unhappy to see this wine again in future vintages. The 2020 Ribolla Gialla Vare Vineyard is super-elegant, savory and nuanced. In 2020, the Ribolla has a bit more edginess than in most years, probably a combination of the natural character of Ribolla, early bottling and the early personality of the year. I like the aromatics quite a bit, though. This needs time in bottle. There is plenty of energy.

The 2021 Chardonnay Trout Gulch Vineyard is a model of precision and class. Pure and crystalline, the 2021 is superb. I would give it a few years to settle down, but all the elements are in place. Lemon peel, chalk, mint, white flowers, sage and crushed rocks abound in this striking, riveting Chardonnay. The 2021 is just pristine. This is what Trout Gulch Chardonnay is all about. The 2021 Red Wine California is a new Bordeaux-based red wine that Duncan Arnot and Nathan Roberts made initially to take the place of the 2020 Cabernets that would have been released around this time but were compromised by smoke. The Red Wine was initially intended to be a fun project, but Arnot and Roberts may have stumbled into what is really a pretty serious red with real potential. The 2021 is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon (Massa, Bedrock and Gordenker), 20% Cabernet Franc (Persia) and 20% Merlot (Massa). A powerful, old-school wine, the 2021 is going to need a few years to shed some tannin. I loved it. (Antonio Galloni)
