Another magical wine, the 2018 Fracture is based on 100% Syrah brought up in new and used French oak. Deep purple-hued, with beautiful notes of crème de cassis, blackberries, vanilla bean, toasted spices, white flowers, and a hints of charcuterie, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, perfectly integrated oak, a rounded, lush mouthfeel, and a great finish. This unabashedly Paso Robles Syrah brings loads of fruit yet stays balanced, elegant, and is simply a thrill to drink. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2020
Youthful purple. Heady, spice-accented aromas of blackberry, blueberry cherry liqueur and pungent flowers show excellent clarity and energetic lift. Sappy and penetrating on the palate, displaying sharply defined black/blue fruit, violet pastille, cola and exotic spice flavors that turn livelier as the wine opens up. Finishes extremely long, smoky and minerally, with powerful, spicy thrust, a repeating floral note and gently chewy, polished tannins.
RP94+94–96+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 6th Feb 2020
A barrel sample of 100% Syrah aging in 65% new French oak, the deep purple-black colored 2018 Fracture has a nose of tar, loamy earth, grilled meats, roasted lamb, rosemary and thyme with loads of violet perfume, mint chocolate and coffee bean aromas — this is already incredibly layered. It’s full-bodied and silky, slowly unfurling to spicy, floral-tinged blue fruits. It has an excellent frame with plush tannins and incredibly surprising freshness, finishing very long and very dense. Around 2,500 cases will be made.

The 2018 Eaba is another wine from Jim that puts its foot firmly on the ripeness pedal and offers a blockbuster-like style of ripe black fruits, wood smoke, cured meats, and peppery goodness. Full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, it’s flawlessly balanced, has gorgeous tannins, and a great finish. Drink it over the coming 10–12 years or so. The 2018 is 59% Syrah, 23% Mourvedre, 15% Grenache, and the rest Viognier, aged 22 months in 50% new French oak. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
The 2018 EABA is another impressive wine in this range. Ample and explosive in the glass, the 2018 hits the palate with masses of dark fruit, chocolate, spice, leather, tobacco and menthol. Bright savory accents from the 60% stems lend energy and freshness. EABA is mostly Bien Nacido fruit, with dollops from White Hawk, Larner, Harrison-Clarke and Alta Mesa.
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 7th Oct 2021
Deep purple-black, the nose opens with boisterous, rip-snorting scents of plum preserves, blackberry pie, licorice and wild sage, giving way to underlying nuances of candied violets, espresso and charcuterie. The full-on, full-bodied palate is jam-packed with decadent black and blue fruit preserves layers, framed by bright acidity and beautifully plush tannins, finishing long and spicy. Yum!

The 2018 Syrah from this estate is another majestic example of the variety and actually reminds me of the 2010. Gorgeous blackberry and blue fruits, notes of bacon fat, bouquet garni, and peppered game, full-bodied richness, and flawless balance all make for a captivating Syrah that can be drunk today or cellared for 15+ years. It’s as good as anything out there. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JS9999 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, December 8, 2021
Amazing aromas of graphite, blackcurrant, black pepper, and blue fruit. Slate, too. Full-bodied, yet so agile and light, in a way that makes it irresistible to taste and drink. The palate is full of flavor with extraordinary mushroom, dried-meat., chocolate and black-fruit character. So long, with a creamy texture from the intense yet fine tannins. Great finish. Hard not to drink now, but will be better in 2025.
RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2020
Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 IX Syrah Estate comes galloping out of the glass with energetic scents of black cherries, mulberries, warm plums and boysenberries plus hints of chocolate box, garrigue, bacon and violets and just a touch of cracked black pepper. Medium-bodied, delicately styled and refreshing, it whispers rather than shouts of fragrant black fruits with soft, rounded tannins coating the long, spicy and floral-perfumed finish. This makes such a great complement to the Cabernet from IX Estate this vintage, it’s almost a shame to split them up!
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021
The 2018 Syrah IX Estate is a bold, luscious wine. Black cherry, licorice, smoke, gravel and cracked pepper are some of the notes that infuse the 2018 Syrah with tremendous character. Dense and explosive, the 2018 is a real head-turner from the very first taste. As always, the Colgin Syrah is a wine of real power, plushness and textural intensity, but there is plenty of structure as well. In 2018, the Syrah only suffers because of the stratospheric quality of the Cabernets.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jan 27, 2022
Potent yet polished, this broad-shouldered red offers deep blueberry, bitter chocolate, smoky meat and licorice flavors that build richness and tension toward medium-grained tannins. Drink now through 2030. 350 cases made. (Tim Fish)

RP9999 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Aug 2021
Medium to deep garnet-purple colored — WOW — perfumed black and blue fruits prance out of the glass, revealing accents of candied violets and cinnamon stick, supporting the plum preserves, blackberry compote and garrigue-scented core, plus hints of molten dark chocolate, licorice, Chinese five spice and bacon with a touch of iron ore. The densely laden, full-bodied palate is seriously showy, featuring flamboyant black fruit preserves and exotic spice layers with a solid backbone of ripe, rounded tannins and bold freshness, finishing with epic length and loads of earth, pepper and floral fireworks.
JD9999 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/26/2021
Checking in as 82% Syrah, 6.7% Mourvèdre, and the rest Petite Sirah and Grenache, the 2018 Syrah Ziehharmonika was largely destemmed and brought up in 51% new French oak. Gorgeous crème de cassis, smoked game, bacon fat, and spring flower notes all soar from the glass of this beauty, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, ripe, building tannins, and a rare mix of richness and freshness. Unquestionably made in a more restrained, elegant style compared to a decade ago, it nevertheless is flawlessly balanced, has awesome tannins, and is just another magical wine from this address that’s going to benefit from 3–5 years of bottle age and keep for two decades. The 2018 Syrah Eleven Confessions Vineyard is pure gold and Syrah doesn’t get any better, no matter what region you’re talking about. Incredible notes of ripe cherries, currants, ground black and white pepper, cured meats, and saddle leather all soar from the glass, and it’s full-bodied, deep, and concentrated on the palate. Opening up with time in the glass, it certainly offers pleasure today yet warrants 2–4 years of bottle age and will have two decades of overall longevity. Hats off to the Krankl family for another utterly magical wine. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP100100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022
The 2018 Syrah Eleven Confessions Vineyard is slow to unfold but stunning once it opens, featuring layered aromas of cassis, coffee beans, garrigue and cracked pepper before segueing to soaring floral perfume. A blend of 82% Syrah, 10.6% Grenache, 5.3% Petite Sirah and 2.1% Viognier, it’s made entirely of estate fruit. It was fermented with 28% whole clusters and matured about 38 months in 50% new French oak. It has an opaque ruby-purple in color, and the palate is full-bodied, powerful and seamless, boasting powdery tannins and integrated acidity. It has a concentrated core of floral fruit and a tremendously long finish. It was bottled on December 15, 2021, and tasted May 24, 2022. 978 cases and 276 magnums will be released in the fall of 2022. (Erin Brooks)

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Syrah Hudson Vineyard barrel sample explodes form the glass with an incredible array of classic Syrah notes: black cherries, black plums, blackberries and licorice with hints of garrigue, tar, bouquet garni and bacon fat. Full-bodied, the palate is equally atomic, with bags of expressive black fruits and meaty/peppery hints framed by ripe, rounded tannins, finishing long, refreshing and oh-so-spicy.
VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021
The 2018 Syrah Hudson Vineyards is every bit as impressive from bottle as it was from barrel. Sleek and silky to the core, the 2018 possesses exceptional balance and tons of pedigree. In 2018, the Syrah is all primary fruit, while the varietal savory notes, that are typical of this wine, have not emerged yet.
VN94+94–97 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
The 2018 Syrah Hudson Vineyards is remarkably primary and yet, texturally, it is a wine of tremendous polish and sophistication. Today, it is the wine’s persistence that is most impressive. Like most of the 2018s here, the Syrah is light on its feet, nuanced and all about finesse. I can’t wait to see it in another year.
