Tensley Syrah, Colson Canyon Vineyard 2021 / 750 ml.

Item#: 59432

RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 8th Dec 2022
The 2021 Syrah Colson Canyon Vineyard is a perfumed powerhouse! Opaque ruby-purple, it has a concentrated core of cassis with touches of tar, thyme, grilled meats, menthol and bitter chocolate. The full-bodied palate is ripe and concentrated with surprising freshness for its style. It has a pleasantly chalky frame and a very long finish replete with violet perfume. This hedonistic Syrah could use another 5+ years in bottle to unwind and will be long-lived in the cellar. (Erin Brooks)

The 2021 Syrah Colson Canyon Vineyard is one of the highlights among the 2021s I tasted from Joey Tensley. Vibrant and driving in feel, the Colson Syrah is endowed with tremendous character. Blue/purplish fruit, gravel, incense, menthol and lavender all take shape as the 2021 shows off its striking beauty. There is so much to look forward to. (Antonio Galloni)

This is distinguished by a brooding personality and intense flavors of blackberry, raspberry, stony mineral and smoked meat flavors that build tension toward medium-grained tannins. Best from 2024 through 2032. 1,670 cases made. (Tim Fish)

From a site located in the hills above Los Olivos, the 2021 Syrah Colson Canyon Vineyard gives up a dense purple hue as well as notes of jammy blueberries, black cherry liqueur, candied violets, and black pepper. This is a concentrated, medium to full-bodied, powerful Syrah that has terrific tannins as well as good acidity. (Jeb Dunnuck)

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

The 2021 Syrah Cleary Ranch captures all the coastal, cool-climate savoriness of the Petaluma Gap. Game, scorched earth, tobacco and black pepper are all woven into a core of dark red-fleshed fruit. Huge tannins, a combination of site and a vintage with low juice yields wrap it all together. This dense, concentrated Syrah needs a few years in bottle, although it is already stunning in its beauty. (Antonio Galloni)

The 2021 La Cuadrilla is another stellar wine in this range from Stolpman. It’s also a ridiculous value. Bright and punchy, with gorgeous red-fleshed fruit, this Syrah/Grenache/Sangiovese blend delivers the goods. Floral and spice notes round the supple finish. The 2021 is a total charmer. (Antonio Galloni)

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2022
Medium ruby in color, the 2021 Patelin de Tablas is a blend of 43% Syrah, 28% Grenache, 23% Mourvèdre and 6% Counoise. It has inviting aromas of blood orange, raspberry and pomegranate with touches of tar and forest floor. The medium-bodied palate is chalky and fresh with a concentrated core of crunchy fruit and a long, floral finish. 3,900 cases were made. (Erin Brooks)
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - May 2023
A wildly perfumed bouquet of earthy rose, white pepper and dried strawberries makes the 2021 Patelin de Tablas a total pleasure on the nose. Silky-smooth yet full of energy, this engulfs the palate in a pure blend of red fruits and spices, as sour citrus hints add contrast. It finishes pleasantly chewy, long and full of zesty tension. Residual acids keep the mouth watering for more. In 2021, the Patelin de Tablas has an elevated amount of Mourvèdre, at 33%, and a bit less Grenache, giving this a wonderfully spicy character.
