Shop for Tempranillo

Tempranillo is the quintessential Spanish wine grape, and it thrives in some of the harshest climates of any wine producing region. It's used for most of the top Spanish wines from Rioja (where it's often blended with Grenache and other grapes) and Ribera del Duero (where it's usually bottled on its own), and also grown in other less-heralded wine regions in the country.

When you think of Tempranillo wines, think value. Many of the top-rated Spanish wines — made with Tempranillo — can be purchased for just a percentage of similarly-rated wines from other parts of the world.

Enjoy our huge selection of Tempranillo wines here at WineMadeEasy.com!

Bright violet. Pungent cherry pit, cassis and licorice scents are sharpened by a peppery nuance. Chewy and focused on the palate, offering bitter cherry and dark berry flavors and a touch of espresso. Dusty tannins frame a long, nervy finish that echoes the cherry note. This is a pretty serious wine for its price category.

Inky ruby. Oak-spiced cherry-vanilla and dark berry scents and hints of coconut and cracked pepper. Broad and chewy on the palate, offering black currant, cherry preserve and bitter chocolate flavors and a touch of licorice. Youthfully chewy tannins lend grip to a long, spicy finish that leaves a sweet dark fruit preserve note behind. Raised in a combination of 85% French and 15% American oak.

Lots of toasted oak with coffee and chocolate to the ripe-plum character. It’s full-bodied and chewy with a polished undertone. Drink or hold.
    VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2021
Bright ruby-red. Lively red and blue fruit, baking spice and floral qualities on the nose. A hint of vanilla emerges with air and adds a sweetening touch to fresh cherry and boysenberry flavors that tighten up on the back half. Finishes smooth and focused, with repeating spiciness and gently firming tannins.

This rich red marries power and grace, with ripe plum and blackberry fruit, while toast, loamy earth and mineral notes add depth. Well-integrated tannins support the thick texture, while firm acidity keeps it fresh. Harmonious and deep. Drink now through 2030. 10,240 cases made, 1,000 cases imported.

A tight red with a dense palate of dark berries and chocolate. Full and reserved, yet polished and energetic. Give it two years to soften. Drink in 2020.
    VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2019
Deep ruby. Smoky-accented cherry, blackcurrant and coconut aromas are sharpened by a suggestion of cracked pepper that adds spicy lift. Push and broad in the mouth, offering sweet dark fruit liqueur and oak spice flavors that slowly tighten up on the back half. Finishes creamy and appealingly sweet, with rounded tannins coming in late to add framework and gentle grip.

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#56824

    RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2019
The 2018 Tío Uco was radically different from the 2017 I also tasted next to it, and right so, because the years were also very different. There is contained ripeness here and a lot more nuance and freshness. It’s more elegant and shows better balance, and it’s a good expression of Tinta de Toro (aka Tempranillo), with a softening 10% Garnacha that fermented with wild yeasts and matured in used oak foudres of different sizes for six months, followed by a further six months in stainless steel before it was bottled. 28,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2019.

  8. La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904

    2011 / 750 ml. | Item#52767

    JS9696 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, October 13, 2020
Lovely dried red fruit, such as plums with just a hint of prunes. Cedar, walnut and leather undertones. Full-bodied with lots of fruit, considering its age, as well as hints of smoke, tobacco, bark and black tea. Some balsamic at the finish. Traditionally styled with lovely results. Drink or hold.
    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2020
The 2011 Rioja Gran Reserva 904 has been one of my go-to cuvées since my earliest days as a wine lover. This latest release is a blend of 60-year-old Tempranillo from Briñas, Rodenzo and Villalba (89%) and the remainder Graciano from the Montecillo vineyard. Fully de-stemmed and aged for 54 months in American oak, it was bottled in November 2016. This is more reticent and less forthcoming on the nose compared to the Viña Ardanza, gradually unfolding to reveal enticing scents of raspberry, crushed strawberry, warm leather, terra cotta and a touch of meat juice. This needed more decanting than the Ardanza. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine-grained tannins, and ultra-smooth in terms of texture. Layers of red fruit laced with clove, sprigs of fresh mint and blood orange dovetail into a soy-tinged finish that you expect to fan out, though it declines; it needs maybe another 12–18 months to really show what it is capable of. Magnificent.

  9. El Coto Rioja Crianza

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#51371

    JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, November 2, 2020
A rich, fruity red with plum, light chocolate and vanilla character. It’s medium-to full-bodied with round, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Drink or hold.
    WS9292 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/20
This wine’s fresh anise scent has the underlying earthiness of tripe, and it would be pretty delicious with a bowl of tripe braised in red wine. It offers the kind of richness without weight that allows the fragrant peppery and cherry-skin flavors to last through the dark, earthy tannins, a little bitter, a little oaky, but cool in the end.

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#53549

    RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
The juicy and chewy unoaked red 2019 Señorío de P. Peciña Cosecha Tinto has bright ripe fruit and an earthy touch, a medium body and soft tannins that give it a supple texture. It’s a blend of Tempranillo with 3% Garnacha and 2% Graciano fermented with indigenous yeasts and kept in tank until bottling. 80,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2020.
    VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2020
Vivid scarlet. Pungent red berry, blood orange and floral scents pick up a spicy topnote with air. Juicy and well-concentrated but lively as well, offering sappy strawberry, cherry and orange pith flavors and a touch of succulent herbs. Finishes long and smooth, with repeating florality and a gently sweet red fruit note.

  13. Psi

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#56335

    JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, November 22, 2021
Blackberry and black-cherry aromas with lavender, cedar and hints of cloves and white pepper, following through to a medium body with ultra-fine tannins and a beautiful, creamy finish. A little tight and reserved now. Another impressive PSI. Give it until 2022.
    RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2021
The 2019 PSI combines their knowledge of the vineyards and their new winery. They learned a lot in 2018, a more heterogeneous vintage, and their sorting machine for grapes had to work a lot. 2019 was more homogeneous, an easier harvest when most people made better wine. In the winery, they invested in a simple building but top technology. They used some 10% Garnacha in the blend, which was done one year after aging the lots separately. It really reminds me of the young wines from Ribera del Duero from the early 1990s, with some aromas of orange peel, earthy and smoky (very mild) and with fine-grained tannins. It has good ripeness at 14% alcohol and integrated acidity but great balance. It showcases the style of the 2019s here, fresher than expected and still a sunny vintage, when 2018 was more crystalline. A triumph over the natural conditions of the year. They finally bottled the expected 345,000 bottles. It was bottled in July 2021.

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#53410

    JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, November 2, 2020
Sweet blackberry, blueberry and bark aromas follow through to a full body with a compact palate of medium, round and chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Drinkable now, but better with a year of bottle age.
    VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2021
Dark ruby. Oak-spiced cherry and blackberry scents are complemented by suggestions of pipe tobacco and mocha. Fleshy and seamless in the mouth, offering juicy red and fruit and floral pastille flavors that firm up slowly on the back half. In an accessible, open-knit style, finishing long and smooth, with even tannins sneaking in late.
    SP8989 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2020
This solid red is reserved but shows good density, with black cherry and plum flavors mingling with notes of loamy earth, anise and tar, backed by firm tannins and balsamic acidity. Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano. Drink now through 2027. 60,000 cases imported.
