Shop for Tempranillo

Tempranillo is the quintessential Spanish wine grape, and it thrives in some of the harshest climates of any wine producing region. It's used for most of the top Spanish wines from Rioja (where it's often blended with Grenache and other grapes) and Ribera del Duero (where it's usually bottled on its own), and also grown in other less-heralded wine regions in the country.

When you think of Tempranillo wines, think value. Many of the top-rated Spanish wines — made with Tempranillo — can be purchased for just a percentage of similarly-rated wines from other parts of the world.

Some modern, meaty oak and spice, laid across ripe dark cherries and plums here. The palate has a very smooth and slick feel with a succulent, juicy and attractively fresh, dark-plum finish. Handy depth. Drink or hold.

    JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, July 24, 2017
A big ripe wine with a touch of caramel alongside the big black plum note. A massively tannic but relatively plush wine that has a certain freshness. This ought to age well. Better from 2020.
    RP8787 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Feb 2017
There is a new red blend of Tempranillo with some 13% Cabernet Sauvignon called 2014 El Transformador, from grapes mostly from a plot that names the wine. The vines were planted in the 1970s on limestone soils. It fermented with indigenous yeasts after a cold soak with dry ice, followed by ten months in second and third year French oak barrels. It showed very high ripeness and some volatility that made it a little blurry. The palate showed similar flavors and some dusty tannins. 8,000 bottles produced.

  5. Cune Rioja Crianza

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#51909

    RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019
The red 2016 Cune Crianza is an affordable and classical blend of Tempranillo with some 15% Garnacha and Mazuelo that is easy to drink and understand, with a soft palate and an approachable profile. It has a bright nose with red fruit rather than black, quite aromatic and expressive. The palate is soft and approachable, very easy to drink, with a touch of freshness. They produced a whopping 4.5 million bottles of this! The bottle I tasted was bottled in April 2019 after 12 months in barrique. There are eight different lots of this wine that are bottled throughout the year, for which they try to make the most homogeneous blend possible, but some variation is inevitable. But the overall quality of this year is certainly higher than the previous one.
    SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jul 31, 2019
Black cherry, red plum, licorice and smoke flavors mingle in this round red. Shows good density, while orange peel acidity and light tannins keep this focused. Drink now through 2028. 375,000 cases made, 10,000 cases imported.
    WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 8/1/2019
Berry, spice and tobacco aromas work in unison to give this Crianza a nice start. A firm palate avoids jamminess and shows grip. Dark plum, raspberry, spice and pepper flavors hold on through the finish. For everyday Rioja, there isn’t much better than this.

    SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2020

Inky ruby. Oak-spiced cherry-vanilla and dark berry scents and hints of coconut and cracked pepper. Broad and chewy on the palate, offering black currant, cherry preserve and bitter chocolate flavors and a touch of licorice. Youthfully chewy tannins lend grip to a long, spicy finish that leaves a sweet dark fruit preserve note behind. Raised in a combination of 85% French and 15% American oak.

  8. El Pedrosal Reserva

    2009 / 750 ml. | Item#52591

    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2019
It’s great when wineries can offer mature vintages, as is the case with the 2009 El Pedrosal Reserva, a wine that has rested in bottle since January 2012 and has had time to develop a complex bouquet and polish and resolve its tannins. The nose is reminiscent of truffles and autumn forest, not unlike some mature old Burgundy, with hints of iodine and soy sauce, savory and quite complex. This has aged really well (their wines usually do), and it’s ready for prime-time drinking, but there should be no rush. It was filled into 12,000 bottles after 24 months in barrique.

  9. Viña Real Rioja Crianza

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#50606

    RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019
The bottle I tasted of the 2016 Viña Real Crianza is a blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano from Rioja Alavesa that fermented destemmed in stainless steel with neutral yeasts and matured in French and American oak barrels for 13 to 14 months, during which time it was racked every five or six months. It’s expressive, deliciously aromatic, floral and elegant, reflecting a cool year that delivered fresh wines that seem to be very approachable early on. 2016 is a pretty vintage, but this wine is not banal; it has depth and complexity that’s remarkable for the price point. The palate is fresh and balanced, with fine tannins. 900,000 bottles produced. It’s bottled in five lots. I tasted from the bottles filled in April 2019.

  11. Flaco Tempranillo

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#53871

    VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
Bright violet. Pungent cherry pit, cassis and licorice scents are sharpened by a peppery nuance. Chewy and focused on the palate, offering bitter cherry and dark berry flavors and a touch of espresso. Dusty tannins frame a long, nervy finish that echoes the cherry note. This is a pretty serious wine for its price category.

  12. La Rioja Alta Viña Alberdi

    Reserva
    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#51527

    JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, November 2, 2020
Aromas of subtle red fruit with plums, spice and cedar. Some dried flowers and dried spices, such as paprika. It’s medium-bodied with some pretty, ripe fruit in the center palate, fine tannins and a citrus and cedar undertone to the finish. Drink or hold.
    RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
The classic Haro-styled red 2015 Viña Alberdi, sold abroad with the mention of Reserva and in Spain as Crianza, is a good introduction to the house style: balsamic reds with abundant notes of sweet spices and cigar ash, developed aromas of forest floor and a creamy twist making small concessions for a fresher and cleaner profile in the last few years but keeping the classic style. There are notes of ground tobacco and earth, and the palate is seamless and sleek, with polished tannins and a soft mouthfeel. There are 550,000 bottles of this wine, all produced from a single master blend. It was bottled in September 2018 after two years in American oak barrels.

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#53221

    JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, January 14, 2021
Sweet berries and walnuts with dried flowers and blueberries on the nose. Full-bodied with very tight, refined tannins that are focused and impressive. I like the texture and definition to the wine, as well as the complex aftertaste. Serious wine that’s nice to drink now, but with three to four years of age, this will be very special. Try after 2022.
    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
In the 2016 Reserva, I found very good freshness and balance and notes of red fruit that always point at more contained ripeness, and it also has a completely different oak profile, a lot subtler and more integrated than in previous vintages. This is a clean and aromatic modern Reserva with some fine tannins to be resolved by some more time in the bottle and/or with hearty food. It’s a blend of 89% Tempranillo and 11% Graciano matured in barrel for 15 months. 148,217 bottles and 1,000 magnums produced. It was bottled in July 2018.
