Opening in the glass with aromas of raspberries, plums, spices and smoke, the 2021 Côte de Brouilly Cuvée Melanie is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and succulent, with a sweet core of fruit, tangy acids, powdery tannins and penetrating finish. It’s one example of a 2021 that I prefer to its riper, more powerful 2020 counterpart. (William Kelley)

Where It's From
Country / France
The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.
Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

The 2021 Moulin-à-Vent Vieilles Vignes is a pretty, charming wine, bursting with aromas of sweet berries and plums mingled with peonies and potpourri. Medium-bodied, fleshy and giving, with powdery tannins and tangy acids, it also exhibits impressive concentration for the vintage. (William Kelley)

Offering up aromas of sweet red berries, orange oil, spices and vine smoke, the 2021 Beaujolais-Villages Le Perréon is a medium to full-bodied, ample and lively wine built around supple tannins, concluding with a saline finish. It’s a charming, expressive wine from the high-altitude granitic slopes of Perréon in the southern Beaujolais. (William Kelley)

Bouland’s 2021 Morgon Bellevue Sable opens in the glass with scents of cherries, plums, peonies and vine smoke. Medium to full-bodied, supple and giving, the sandy soils (and younger vines) from which it derives naturally lend it a more open-knit profile. (William Kelley)

Bright and charming, the 2021 Morgon Corcelette bursts with aromas of plums, raspberries, rose petals, vine smoke and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, with bright acids and melting tannins, it’s another of the more immediate, giving wines in the range. (William Kelley)

The 2018 Morgon Bellevue Sable comes from younger vines, planted on Viala rootstock in sandy soils — as the “sable” newly added to its label makes clear. Revealing aromas of blackberries, smoked meats, cracked pepper and violets, it’s medium to full-bodied, ample and muscular, with powdery structuring tannin, juicy acids and a blockier, more reserved profile than the Chiroubles and Brouilly that preceded it. This will demand a couple of years’ patience before it shows all its cards.

The 2020 Morgon Bellevue Sable mingles aromas of cherries and wild plums with hints of violets and spices. Medium to full-bodied, sumptuous and satiny, with succulent acids and melting tannins, it’s charming and seamless, standing out as one of the most demonstrative, immediate wines in the range. One of the last cuvées to be bottled this year was the 2021 Morgon Pré Jourdan, an impressive effort redolent of raspberries, cherries, sweet spices, rose petals and vine smoke. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it’s layered and charming, with attractive balance and a long, expansive finish. (William Kelley)
