Day Grist Vineyard Zinfandel 2015 / 750 ml.

Item#: 45335

VN8888 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2017
The 2015 Zinfandel Grist, from a rugged hillside site in Dry Creek, has plenty of character, but it also comes across as rustic and rough around the edges, especially in its tannin profile. There is no shortage of depth to the black cherry, plum and lavender flavors. It will be interesting to see if the winemaking team can coax a little more finesse from this site in future vintages.

From the Producer

Ehren has had the pleasure of working with the Grist vineyard since the 1990’s. The history of this vineyard goes back even further, with original plantings dating to the late 1800’s. Vibrantly clean and fresh from start to finish. Dense, dark brambly fruits highlighted by notes of graphite and violets balanced by a bright and focused finish.

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Zinfandel St. Peter’s Church Vineyard has a nose of raspberry pie, blueberry compote and preserved plums with underlying hints of scorched earth, Indian spices, tobacco and stewed tea. Big, concentrated and full-bodied in the mouth, it has a racy line and a lovely plush texture, finishing with a compelling herbal lift. 165 cases were made.
