When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

There’s a delicacy to this Zinfandel due in large part to the vibrancy of the fruit and elevated acid structure. While the nose leads with oak tones of fresh cedar wood, chocolate and nutmeg, the palate opens up to vivacious fruit. notes of black and red plum, red currant, rhubarb, mission fig, boysenberry and blueberry.

RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022
The exact proportions and origins of the 2020 Zinfandel Blend 8 Years in the Desert are deliberately kept fuzzy by the winery, but the wine does include Petite Sirah, Syrah and Barbera in addition to Zin. Aged in roughly half new oak, the nose brings an overlay of vanilla to a core of ripe blackberries. Full-bodied and open-knit, it adds briary, herbal notes on the palate, plus a bit of cracked pepper. Soft, dusty tannins mark the finish, along with hints of mocha and bittersweet chocolate. Drink it over the next several years. (Joe Czerwinski)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Aug 31, 2022
A bold and brawny blend, offering straightforward dark berry and savory spice flavors. Ends with a peppery accent. Zinfandel, Syrah, Petite Sirah and Barbera. Drink now through 2030. 29,000 cases made.

JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/2/2022
The 2020 Zinfandel Papera Ranch is ripe with fresh berries, raspberry preserve, and baking spice. Its gushy fruit up front gives way to a note of raspberry seed and refreshing lift on the finish. Drink 2023–2032. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
The 2020 Zinfandel Papera Ranch is a charming, seductive wine. All the elements are so nicely balanced. Succulent red/purplish fruit, mint, blood orange, sage and rose petal lend quite a bit of immediacy, while silky tannins wrap it all together in style. The 2020 is an unusually restrained Papera, but its balance is beyond reproach. A few hours of aeration are hugely beneficial. (Antonio Galloni)

The 2020 Zinfandel Steacey Ranch is packed with super-ripe blue/purplish fruit, lavender, cinnamon and dried flowers. It is one of the more overt, juicy wines in this range. Time in the glass brings out intense floral notes and a whole range of red berry Zinfandel fruit. This is nicely done. (Antonio Galloni)
