Shop the Best Wines from Spain

Wines from Spain are one of the great values in today's marketplace. One can find high quality, highly-rated, modern-styled Spanish wine for under $10 or a great value from a producer that has been around for more than a century for under $20.

In Spain wine regions are administered quite a bit like they are in France and are called Denominación de Origen or "D.O." for short. Rioja and Priorat are the only Spanish wine regions that have an elevated status; Denominación de Origen Calificada (D.O.C.) and Denominación d'Origen Qualificada (D.O.Q.) respectively.

Eighty percent of the wines from Spain come from a selection of about 20 grapes, although there are at least 400 grapes grown in Spain. The most important grapes are Tempranillo, Garnacha (Grenache), Monastrell (Mourvèdre) and Albariño.

Very ripe and slightly raw oak over black fruit and coconut candy. The palate has dense, chewy fruit and really assertive tannins. Needs a year or two to settle in.

    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Apr 2022
Next to the 2018, I also tasted the 2019 Clio, a similar blend of 70% Monastrell and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon from a vintage marked by torrential rains caused by the DANA storm in September that delivered 200+liters of rain. It fermented in stainless steel with neutral yeasts and matured in French and American oak barrels for 23 months. It’s slightly lower in alcohol than the 2018, 15.5%. I think the Cabernet was more noticeable here and it added a certain freshness to the wine, which, coupled with a little less alcohol, made the wine come through as a little cooler and more continental. All within the Chris Ringland style, of course… 50,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2020.

  6. Evodia

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#52701

    JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - March 22, 2021
Based on 100% Garnacha, the 2019 Evodia is a killer value that delivers incredible Garnacha flair at a crazy good price. Kirsch, blackberry, acacia flower, violet, and sandalwood notes give way to a medium to full-bodied, seamless, beautifully layered wine with fabulous tannins, no hard edges, and a great, great finish. This is the finest wine at this price point in the world.
    RP90+90+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Apr 2020
The 2019 Evodia is pure Garnacha from old head-pruned vines in the Sierra Santa Cruz in Calatayud. It fermented with around 20% full clusters in concrete and matured mostly in concrete with just 20% of the blend put in used oak barrels for three months. There is a component that matured in concrete egg that I was able to taste separately that seems to bring a touch of freshness to the final blend, something welcomed in a warm year like 2019, which seems like a fresher version of 2017, when the wines achieved quite good ripeness. The nose opens up nicely in the glass and is quite aromatic and floral, exuberant, with a heady touch of ripe fruit. It’s young and tasty, tender and pleasant to drink, with a forward personality. A real bargain. I hope there are more wines like this in Aragon, where the wealth of Garnacha vineyards would make it possible quite easily. 150,000 bottles produced. There are two batches per year. What I tasted had been bottled in February 2020, just a few days before I sampled it.

  7. Honoro Vera Monastrell Organic Monastrell Grapes

    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#46711

    RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Apr 2022
The certified-organic 2020 Honoro Vera Organic was produced with Monastrell that fermented in open-top stainless steel vats with selected indigenous yeasts and was bottled unoaked. It’s quite similar to the regular Monastrell with 14.5% alcohol and a fruit-driven and juicy personality. It has notes of ripe black fruit and aromatic herbs, juicy, hedonistic and tasty, and it’s a very good value and apt for the table. Balanced and harmonious, perhaps a little more concentrated than the regular Honoro Vera Monastrell. A bargain. 216,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2021.

  12. Río Madre Rioja Graciano

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#55602

    VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2021
Inky ruby. Blackberry, cherry pit, pungent flowers and a hint of olive on the fragrant nose. Gently chewy and fleshy in the mouth, offering bitter cherry and cassis flavors that take a spicy turn through the midpalate. Smooth tannins come in late to add shape to the long, smoke- and spice-tinged finish.
    SP8686 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021
Crushed red plum and kirsch flavors are backed by a tangy acidity in this broad, fresh red, with supple tannins encasing the graphite, anise and herb elements on the finish. Drink now through 2024. 7,500 cases made, 6,500 cases imported.

  13. Alvaro Palacios Gratallops

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#52726

    RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Aug 2019
The red “vi de vila” (village wine) 2017 Gratallops is a blend of 80% Garnacha, 19% Cariñena and 1% white grapes that fermented crushed and destemmed in oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in oak bocoyes and foudres for 15 months. This is the wine that surprised me the most when they were poured and I first put my nose in the glass. It feels floral, aromatic, clean, open and expressive like no other Gratallops that I remember. It seems quite marked by the Garnacha, with notes of Mediterranean herbs, red berries and fennel. For Álvaro Palacios, the wines from Gratallops have to have ripeness, not be very dark in color, with brightness, red rather than black fruit, not heavy, with the textured sensation of the slate soils. However, not all wines show the character of the village, as some people are still using foreign varieties, sometimes picking overripe, extracting too much and using too much oak, which hides the character of the wines. The wines have to be transparent. This Gratallops could very much represent the character of the place. All of the 2017s have very low pH, which is quite remarkable for the extremely warm and dry year. This has to be among the best Gratallops to date. 18,900 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2019.

    VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
Bright violet. Pungent cherry pit, cassis and licorice scents are sharpened by a peppery nuance. Chewy and focused on the palate, offering bitter cherry and dark berry flavors and a touch of espresso. Dusty tannins frame a long, nervy finish that echoes the cherry note. This is a pretty serious wine for its price category.

    WS8989 pts. - Wine & Spirits - August 1, 2013
One of the most reliable Cavas at the price, this offers cool, crisp cider apple flavors along with leesy notes of toast, nuts and flowers. It’s gentle and clean, fuel for a dance party.
    SP8686 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2013
Fresh and balanced, with a creamy bead supporting apple puree, pastry cream, anise and preserved lemon notes. Drink now. 75,570 cases imported.
    WE8686 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 11/1/2013
Standard lemon-lime aromas open this quaffable Cava. In the mouth, it’s creamy and soft but not mushy, with candied mango, papaya and vanilla flavors that finish sweet.
    RP8585 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 1st May 2011
Segura Viudas’ entry level Cava, the Non-Vintage Brut Reserva offers up a pleasant perfume of yeast notes, biscuit, and green apple. It is a straightforward, lively, slightly off-dry bubbly that is a good value for drinking over the next 12–18 months.
