Shop for Gewurztraminer

Gewurztraminer, a spicy white wine originally hailing from the German-speaking town of Tramin in Northern Italy, has been cultivated for centuries but is enjoying a surge in popularity in recent years. "Gewurz" is famous for its aromatic nose and spicy flavor notes, and some of the world's best examples of Gewurztraminer come from the French region of Alsace. Wine lovers flock to Gewurz for its classic fruit notes, and while the wine is often sweet-smelling to the nose, it's often a dry white wine on the palate.

Outside of Alsace, wine made from the Traminer grape is most prevalent in Germany, Austria, Canada, and right here in the United States. In fact, there are several fantastic Gewurztraminers produced in New York's Finger Lakes, just a stone's throw from us here at WineMadeEasy.com.

Loads of orange blossom, plumeria, tuberose, jasmine and fruit-cocktail aromas leap off the nose of this medium-sweet bottling. The wine is zippy and nearly pétillant on the palate, where flavors of tropical white flower and orange syrup are ripe while zesty.

The 2019 Gewürztraminer comes in with 5.1 grams of residual sugar, 6.9 of total acidity and 12.9% alcohol. This is sourced from Keuka vineyard blocks from 1968 and 1981. Enticingly aromatic with its classic rose petal nuances, this is a balanced Gewürz that shows off some lychees on the finish. The modest sugar is easily offset by the acidity. Very gentle and just a touch bland for this grape, it lacks some power and doesn’t show much spice, but the rest is quite well done, certain to make fans of this grape happy at a pretty nice price. This is always a nice and consistent offering, never quite having the structure to rise to star status, but always delivering plenty of easy-sipping value.

Aromas of milky white blossoms and ginger are at the fore, with a solid base of creamy melon. This is rich and silken in feel, offering a luxurious palate of melon and white plum, lifted by accents of peppery spice and flowers. Grapefruit bitters add a bit of astringency to help firm up the close.

Dark, bright yellow. Captivating honeyed tropical fruits and sweet spices on the classic Gewürztraminer nose. Opulently spicy, rich and ripe in the mouth, with smoky tropical fruit flavors complicated by notes of iodine, sweet spices and flowers. Readers ought to take note that this outstanding wine tastes slightly sweet. Match it with white meat dishes involving cream sauces or mushrooms, or with a spicy pumpkin soup. An archetypal Gewürz of the big and opulent kind, as opposed to the spicy/floral style.
