View more wines from Germany

The German wine-making tradition is long and illustrious, dating back to as early as AD 800. And for a country just slightly smaller than Montana, Germany produces and consumes a great deal of wine (it's the seventh-largest producer and sixth-highest consumer).

Germany is situated at the most northerly latitude at which grapes can ripen; the winters are cold and the growing season short, all of which, incidentally, are nearly identical to the Finger Lakes Region of New York. Most of its wine regions are situated in central and southwestern Germany. The most significant are the Rheingau, Rheinhessen, Rheinpfalz, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Nahe, Franken and Baden.

The Riesling grape is king in Germany, even though it represents only 20% of total plantings: Müller-Thurgau (a Riesling-silvaner cross) has the most, followed by the red grapes Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Dornfelder. In good years and in the care of master winemakers, Riesling makes one of the greatest white wines in the world, with a perfect balance of sugar and acid, exquisite fruit and fragrance and with considerable potential for aging.

Sourced from old vines, the 2018 Elisenberger Riesling Spätlese was harvested in the third week of October as the very last "regular" wine (so 3.5 weeks after the Kabinett). It is based on completely healthy fruit and was vinified entirely in traditional fuders. Offering a deep and flinty bouquet, this is a lush, elegant, highly refined and stimulating Spätlese with a salty-piquant finish. Tasted from the cask in March 2019.

The 2019 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese is fascinatingly pure, bright, refined and flinty on the nose that reveals very fine Riesling, slate and iron aromas. Pure, fresh and filigreed on the palate, this is a crystalline, fresh and piquant, crisp and crystalline JSU Spätlese in the acidity-accentuated MFR style. The finish is pure and salty, piquant and concise and makes this an exciting wine to try again in 20 years. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. (Stephan Reinhardt)

I love the beautifully ripe but delicate yellow-fruit aromas of this Spätlese, ranging from mirabelle to peach and just a hint of honeysuckle. A noble wine that remains restrained and slowly reveals its treasures to the patient. Discreet grape sweetness adds a touch of creaminess to the mid-palate, but the very mineral finish is totally clean. Drink or hold.

JS9696 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, April 12, 2021
Plenty of exotic-fruit character from botrytis, but they haven’t made this refined Auslese loud, only more complex and tantalizing. Considerable concentration, but everything fits together so neatly that it comes off as restrained. Very complex, almost dry finish with a hint of vanilla pod. Delicious now, but so much aging potential. Drink or hold.
RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
From the overripe and botrytized berries of the Spätlese selection, the 2019 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese is intense and concentrated on the nose, but due to the sulfuric notes, it is far from being as terroir-driven as the Spätlese or even the Kabinett. The fruit is concentrated yet piquant, fresh and elegant on the palate and pure, refined and subtle on the finish due to the crystalline acidity and finesse that represents the JSU. This is an excellent Spätlese that needs at least a decade to age to its full finesse. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

The 2019 Elisenberger Riesling Spätlese is very clear and concentrated on the dense and lime-fresh nose that is attractive in its precision, concentration and possibly also its cereal-tinged, crisp fruit aromas. Sweet and concentrated on the palate, this is a rich and very precise, tightly structured and persistent Spätlese with laser-sharp acidity that is imbedded into the dense, elegant and persistently salty Spätlese fruit. This is a great terroir wine—in 20 years—and I don’t see much sense in opening it a moment sooner. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. (Stephan Reinhardt)

RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 25th Aug 2022
The 2021 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett offers a clear, precise and pure, lovely slate-driven bouquet with citric fruit and some cassis and gooseberry aromas. Crystalline, linear and fresh on the palate, this is an elegant, lush and silky-textured, precise and almost sharp but also round and finely sweet Kabinett from the Himmelreich that shows red and black currant notes on the aftertaste. A gorgeous Kabinett that has to be aged for 10–15 years. Sourced from 80-year-old vines on pure gray slate. Bottled with a spectacular total acidity of 12 grams per liter, but you don’t feel the grams of acidity; and believe me, it’s serious but balanced by extract and almost 50 grams per liter of residual sugar. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. (Stephan Reinhardt)

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
The 2019 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spätlese is from 70-year-old vines in the Bußlay (Busslay) plot, a former top vineyard in Erden, and opens with a deep, pure, fresh and crunchy/earthy slate aroma intermixed with delicate, flinty and clear, crisp Riesling aromas. Filigreed, sweet and finessed on the palate, this is an intense and concentrated Spätlese of great class, with a complex, salty-piquant and crisp finish. The acidity is quite high and sharp here but meets the concentrated, sweet fruit, making this a kind of Eiswein among the Spätlese wines. The wine is really crisp and green and needs years to age. Fascinating but dangerous if you are not used to this kind of acidity. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 25th Aug 2022
Picked from 80- to 90-year-old vines with the fruit at around 75° to 76° Oechsle, Richter’s 2021 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett offers pure yet intense and concentrated, flinty-scented fruit with citrus and red cassis aromas. Round and savory on the palate, with crystalline acidity and perfectly round fruit, this is an elegant and refined WSU with redcurrant notes on the saline finish. The acidity is fine but everything else is shy except for the great expression of the blue slate in the Sonnenuhr. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. Picked at 76° Oechsle, the 2021 Mülheimer Sonnenlay Riesling Kabinett Feinherb is intense and lemon-fresh on the nose that shows pure and flinty fruit. Lush but clear and filigreed on the palate, with fine, crystalline and playful slate acidity, this is a remarkable, substantial and charmingly textured but frisky Sonnenlay Kabinett made in the medium-dry/sweet style. Bottled with 25 grams per liter of residual sugar and 9.5% alcohol, this is an excellent wine to have with food, particularly in 5–10 years. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. (Stephan Reinhardt)

WS9393 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 02/21
Elisenberg sits on the south side of the Mosel, set well back from the river, behind the town of Mülheim. The cooler climate and combination of slate and quartz in the soils gives the wine a unique character — in the case of this 2019, one that’s herbal and sagey, with layers of lemony flavor — zest, pith, pulp and lemon verbena. The bright acidity gives it a vivacity that’s mouthwatering, ready to slice through a savory bread pudding.
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
The 2019 Elisenberger Riesling Kabinett is very clear, fresh and coolish on the still reductive yet pure and stony nose. Lush and piquant on the palate this is a concentrated, lean and laser-sharp Riesling with juicy fruit and concise acidity. The finish goes straight, which makes this a Riesling for Japanese knife fans. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.
