When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

All barrel fermented, the medium straw-colored 2022 Sauvignon Blanc Sonoma Valley is soft with tropical aromas as well as fresh herbs, mango skin, fresh peach, and wet stone. A medium bodied white, it boasts rounded fruit, a soft, stony texture, and fresh acidity without any harshness. A very attractive wine, it shows what great Sonoma Sauvignon can be all about. Drink 2023–2028. (Audrey Frick)

Lots of pear and apple puree with hints of flowers and citrus. Tropical fruit undertones. Medium to full body with melon and hints of pear. It is dense yet lively. Nicely framed. Sourced mostly from Napa and Sonoma with some Mendocino and Lake County. A blend of sauvignon blanc and semillon. Drink now. (James Suckling)

Blackcurrants, black and green olives, rosemary and some crushed walnuts on the nose. Fresh and refined, with a medium to full body and fine-grained tannins. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)

Ripe, fresh and polished, this delivers unencumbered red and black cherry fruit notes laced with a tickle of tobacco, all backed by a just firm enough finish to keep this balanced and engaging. Drink now through 2025. 157,000 cases made. (James Molesworth)
